We're seeking a Senior Photo Editor to join our client's dynamic team in D.C!

As a Senior Photo Editor, you will work with photographers, writers, text editors, video producers, and designers to execute specific stories, projects, bookazines and/or as executive producer for story teams, moments, or franchises. This position will also edit and oversee the production of single topic newsstand issues in collaboration with other photo editors and bookazine staff. This will entail photo editing as well as top editing others and ensuring all photo deadlines are met by all assigned photo editors.

The position requires a sophisticated visual aesthetic, strong editing skills, the ability to produce complex projects, the flexibility to work with ideas and photographers in the studio or on location, and an ability to work creatively and efficiently.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage executive production of complex photographic stories and special issues, ensuring projects are well managed and meet budgets and deadlines.
  • Research and pitch ideas, assign photographers, develop story narratives, establish content plans and budgets, select compelling images for publication, and collaborate with designers and producers to create engaging visual narratives.
  • Plan cover approaches with photographers and colleagues, collect accurate caption information, verify credit lines, archive and transmit images, and ensure image veracity.
  • Provide production and field support to photographers, including securing visas, permits, releases, and specialized equipment.
  • Project manage stories, moments, and franchises, collaborating across teams to produce compelling content for audiences.
  • Mentor and provide guidance for less experienced photo editors on the team, while scouting and developing photographic talent for company.

Qualifications:

  • Experience level: Experienced
  • Education: Bachelors
  • Minimum of 7 years experience in the photography industry in an editing or advanced role, with knowledge of photography business, trends, and best practices.
  • Experience with long-form documentary visual storytelling, and understanding of videography and mobile storytelling.
  • Understanding of editorial content creation from pitch to completion.
  • Strong project management skills, ability to manage deadlines, budgets, and multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to collaborate across departments, manage workflows, and communicate effectively with colleagues.
  • Experience managing deliverables, assets, and workflows.
  • Ability to provide guidance and feedback to less experienced colleagues respectfully and constructively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Air Table, and at least one photo editing program (e.g., Photo Mechanic, Lightroom).
  • Familiarity with software programs regularly used (e.g., Premiere, Filemaker, Asana, Slack, Keynote).
  • Ability to think strategically about the overall direction and future goals within and outside of the photo department.
